Put-in-Bay Day Trip: Ferry, Cart & Itinerary

Yes, you can day-trip Put-in-Bay. Walk on the Miller Ferry from Catawba (~$18 adult round trip, free parking, Lime Kiln dock) or the Jet Express from Port Clinton (~$35, downtown, later boats). Rent a cart at the dock, work the harbor, and ride the last boat home.

The 10-second answer: walk on Miller Ferry for about $18 adult round trip with free Catawba parking, land at Lime Kiln Dock, and rent a 4-passenger golf cart ($60–75/day) at the top of the hill. Or take the Jet Express from Port Clinton (~$35), land downtown, and stay out later: last Miller is earlier and 2 miles from the bar strip; Jet is the night boat. Last boats shift by season, so check the timetable before you drive to the dock.

Miller Ferry vs Jet Express for a day trip

Both boats work. The choice is fare versus where you land and how late you can stay. Full schedules and vehicle rules live in the Put-in-Bay ferry guide, the Miller Ferry page and the Jet Express page.

A Saturday on the island, hour by hour

Built around a peak-summer Miller crossing, the way the attractions guide times a one-day sampler. Jet Express passengers skip the Lime Kiln cart pickup and walk off into downtown instead. Arrive at Catawba early: the free lots and the boats both back up by mid-morning.

WhenWhat
~6:30–8:30 amFirst Miller boats leave Catawba around 6:30 am in peak summer, about every 30 minutes. Park free, walk on, no reservation.
~9:00 amMiller crossing (~18 min). Land Lime Kiln. E's Golf Carts sits at the top of the dock hill; there is a short incline after you walk off the boat.
9:30–10:30 amPerry's Victory grounds and visitor center first (free). The tower elevator is closed for 2026–2027 restoration, so this is a harbor-view walk, not a ride to the top.
10:30 am–noonPerry's Cave Family Fun Center: cave tours $12 adult / $7 child 6–11, plus butterfly house and mini golf. Budget 90 minutes. The combo (3 of 5) is $30 adult.
Noon–1:30 pmLunch at the Boardwalk. Walk DeRivera Park. Bar-hoppers can see the Beer Barrel Saloon (the World's Longest Bar, over 400 feet) from here without a second ferry.
1:30–2:30 pmCrystal Cave under Heineman's Winery, about $10 including a tasting. The cave itself is 30 minutes; add time if you stay for a glass on the patio.
2:30–4:00 pmSwim at the South Bass Island State Park beach, or kayak the harbor ($20–40 for a single). Check beach water quality and the algae bloom forecast the week you go.
4:00–5:00 pmKimberly's Carousel downtown, $3 a ride, about 10 minutes. Or a slow cart lap back toward Lime Kiln along Langram Road.
5:00 pm onwardReturn the cart: plan 45 minutes on a Saturday. Last Miller often 9:30–11:00 pm on the busiest nights from Lime Kiln. Jet Express typically around 11:45 pm Friday and Saturday from downtown. Confirm both before you order another round.

Sleep by the dock you will use

Island rooms sell out on summer Saturdays and often require two nights. Day-trippers sleep in Port Clinton or Catawba, walk onto the morning boat, and still have a bed if they miss the last one back.

What to skip if you have six hours

A half day is doable and rushed. Keep the ferry, one cart, the monument grounds, one cave and lunch. Cut the rest.

SkipWhy
Perry's tower elevatorClosed through the 2027 season anyway. Grounds are free and fast.
A second cavePerry's Cave wants 90 minutes; Crystal Cave wants about an hour. Pick one.
Kayak or parasailHarbor kayaks run $20–40; parasailing $60–80. That is an hour you do not have.
Lake Erie Islands Historical SocietyText-heavy. Kids under 8 are done in 15 minutes.
Sonny S to Middle BassThe lunch hop is real (about 10 minutes from the Boardwalk) but it eats the afternoon. Save it for a longer day; see the islands guide.
Bringing a carNo same-day vehicle round trip on weekends. The Catawba car line can run two or three hours.

Golf carts: reserve or walk

South Bass is under four square miles, and a cart is how most day-trippers cover it. A 4-passenger gas cart runs about $12–15 an hour or $60–75 a day. After years of Saturday gridlock, a 2024 ordinance capped golf-cart registrations at 865 per year for village rental companies, with a separate 865 cap for the township, and froze each operator at its 2023 fleet. Peak weekends still draw 10,000-plus visitors. The island runs out of carts by mid-morning.

Miller passengers pick up at E's Golf Carts (top of Lime Kiln) or Erie Island Carts one block up Langram Road. Jet Express passengers walk to Golf Cart Depot, Put-in-Bay Golf Cart Center, Village Carts or Delaware Carts by Mr. Ed's. Full fleets, hours and the designated-driver rules are on the golf cart rental guide.

Perry's tower is closed through 2027

Do not build the day around riding the 352-foot column. The observation deck and elevator are closed for a $20M National Park Service restoration through the 2027 season and reopen spring 2028. The visitor center and grounds stay open and free. Spend that slot at Perry's Cave or Crystal Cave instead, then walk the harbor.

Miss the last boat?

Miller lands at Lime Kiln, two miles from downtown, and its last boats run earlier than Jet Express. If last call at the Beer Barrel is the plan, take Jet and walk onto the boat from the strip. If you still miss it, you need a mainland bed, not a hope and an island front desk. Summer weekend Put-in-Bay hotels sell out and often require two nights. Port Clinton, Catawba and Sandusky rooms cost less; browse where to stay before you leave home.

Ferries run roughly late March through late fall and stop when ice closes the lake. A winter day trip is an air-taxi problem, not a boat problem; the freeze dates are on our Lake Erie ice statistics page. For a quieter island with a beach and the Glacial Grooves, compare Kelleys Island.

Boat, cart, mainland bed

Line up the three things a Saturday day trip actually needs: pick Miller or Jet, reserve a golf cart, and keep a Port Clinton or Catawba hotel behind you if the last boat is close.

Put-in-Bay day trip FAQ

Can you do Put-in-Bay as a day trip?

Yes. A lot of people try the island that way: park at Catawba or Port Clinton, walk onto a ferry, rent a golf cart, and ride the last boat home. One full day covers the monument grounds, a cave, the harbor and lunch. Overnight is worth it for sunsets and a quieter morning, but you do not need a hotel on the island to see Put-in-Bay.

Which ferry is better for a Put-in-Bay day trip, Miller or Jet Express?

Miller Ferry from Catawba Point is the budget boat: about $18 adult round trip, free parking, an 18-minute crossing, and golf carts waiting at Lime Kiln Dock. Jet Express from downtown Port Clinton costs about $35 round trip, lands in the middle of downtown at DeRivera Park, and runs later (around 11:45 pm on summer Friday and Saturday nights). Take Miller if you want the lowest fare and a cart at the dock. Take Jet if you want to walk straight onto the bar strip and catch a night boat.

How much does a Put-in-Bay day trip cost?

Plan around the ferry, the cart and one paid stop. Miller is $18 adult round trip ($3 for kids 6-11); Jet Express is about $35 from Port Clinton. A 4-passenger golf cart runs about $60 to $75 for the day. Perry's Cave is $12 adult, Crystal Cave under Heineman's is about $10, and Kimberly's Carousel is $3. Catawba parking is free; the Jet Express Port Clinton lot is about $18 a day. Confirm current fares with the operator before you drive out.

Do I need a golf cart for a day trip?

If you land downtown on the Jet Express and stay on the harbor, DeRivera Park and the bar strip, you can walk it. You want a cart if you come in on Miller (Lime Kiln is 2 miles from downtown), travel with kids, or want Perry's Cave, Heineman's Winery or the state-park beach without a long walk. On a summer Saturday the carts sell out by mid-morning, so reserve with the room or the ferry.

What time is the last ferry back from Put-in-Bay?

It shifts by season and by boat. In peak summer the last Miller boats often leave Lime Kiln around 9:30 to 11:00 pm on the busiest nights, and you still have a 2-mile ride from downtown to the dock. Jet Express typically runs until around 11:45 pm on summer Friday and Saturday nights and docks downtown, so it is the night boat. Spring and fall schedules shrink. Check the current timetable before you count on the last boat.

What if I miss the last boat back to the mainland?

You sleep on the mainland side next time, or you scramble for an island room that night. Summer Saturdays sell out Put-in-Bay hotels, and many properties run a two-night weekend minimum, so a same-night backup on the island is not a plan. Book a Port Clinton or Catawba hotel near your return dock if you think you will stay late, or set an alarm for cart return (plan 45 minutes on a Saturday) and the last advertised boat.

Is Perry's Monument open on a day trip in 2026?

The grounds and visitor center are open and free. The observation deck and tower elevator are closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons for a National Park Service restoration, reopening spring 2028. You cannot ride to the top this year. Walk the War of 1812 grounds, then spend the hour you would have spent in line at a cave.

Can I bring my car to Put-in-Bay for the day?

Only on Miller Ferry, and not as a same-day round trip on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays. The vehicle line at Catawba can run two or three hours on a summer Saturday, and island car parking is scarce. Park free at Catawba, walk on, and rent a golf cart at Lime Kiln.

Should I book a golf cart before a Saturday day trip?

Yes. A 2024 village ordinance capped golf-cart registrations at 865 per year for village rental companies, froze each operator at its 2023 fleet size, and peak weekends still draw 10,000-plus visitors. Carts sell out by mid-morning. E's Golf Carts sits at the top of the Lime Kiln Dock if you ride Miller; downtown fleets sit a short walk from the Jet Express ramp.
