Sleep by the dock you will use
Island rooms sell out on summer Saturdays and often require two nights. Day-trippers sleep in Port Clinton or Catawba, walk onto the morning boat, and still have a bed if they miss the last one back.

A Saturday on the island, hour by hour
Built around a peak-summer Miller crossing, the way the attractions guide times a one-day sampler. Jet Express passengers skip the Lime Kiln cart pickup and walk off into downtown instead. Arrive at Catawba early: the free lots and the boats both back up by mid-morning.

A half day is doable and rushed. Keep the ferry, one cart, the monument grounds, one cave and lunch. Cut the rest.

Golf carts: reserve or walk
South Bass is under four square miles, and a cart is how most day-trippers cover it. A 4-passenger gas cart runs about $12–15 an hour or $60–75 a day. After years of Saturday gridlock, a 2024 ordinance capped golf-cart registrations at 865 per year for village rental companies, with a separate 865 cap for the township, and froze each operator at its 2023 fleet. Peak weekends still draw 10,000-plus visitors. The island runs out of carts by mid-morning.
Miller passengers pick up at E's Golf Carts (top of Lime Kiln) or Erie Island Carts one block up Langram Road. Jet Express passengers walk to Golf Cart Depot, Put-in-Bay Golf Cart Center, Village Carts or Delaware Carts by Mr. Ed's. Perry's tower is closed through 2027
Do not build the day around riding the 352-foot column. The observation deck and elevator are closed for a $20M National Park Service restoration through the 2027 season and reopen spring 2028. The visitor center and grounds stay open and free. Spend that slot at Perry's Cave or Crystal Cave instead, then walk the harbor. The visitor center is open daily 10 am–6 pm through September 6, then 10 am–5 pm daily through September 28, then 10 am–5 pm Friday through Monday from September 29 to October 26; see the NPS operating-hours page for later-season changes.
Miss the last boat?
Miller lands at Lime Kiln, two miles from downtown, and its last boats run earlier than Jet Express. If last call at the Beer Barrel is the plan, take Jet and walk onto the boat from the strip. If you still miss it, you need a mainland bed. Summer weekend Put-in-Bay hotels sell out and often require two nights. Can you do Put-in-Bay as a day trip?
Yes. A lot of people try the island that way: park at Catawba or Port Clinton, walk onto a ferry, rent a golf cart, and ride the last boat home. One full day covers the monument grounds, a cave, the harbor and lunch. Overnight is worth it for sunsets and a quieter morning, but you do not need a hotel on the island to see Put-in-Bay.

You want a cart if you come in on Miller (Lime Kiln is 2 miles from downtown), travel with kids, or want Perry's Cave, Heineman's Winery or the state-park beach without a long walk. On a summer Saturday the carts sell out by mid-morning, so reserve with the room or the ferry.
What time is the last ferry back from Put-in-Bay?
It shifts by season and by boat. On the Miller Ferry fall schedule (Sep 21 to Nov 1), the last boat leaves Lime Kiln at 6:00 pm through Oct 25 (7:00 pm Fri and Sat through Oct 10), and you still have a 2-mile ride from downtown to the dock. Jet Express typically runs until around 11:45 pm on summer Friday and Saturday nights and docks downtown, so it is the night boat. Fall schedules are thinner than peak summer. What if I miss the last boat back to the mainland?
You sleep on the mainland side next time, or you scramble for an island room that night. Summer Saturdays sell out Put-in-Bay hotels, and many properties run a two-night weekend minimum, so a same-night backup on the island is not a plan. Book a Port Clinton or Catawba hotel near your return dock if you think you will stay late, or set an alarm for cart return (plan 45 minutes on a Saturday) and the last advertised boat.
Is Perry's Monument open on a day trip in 2026?
The grounds and visitor center are open and free. The observation deck and tower elevator are closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons for a National Park Service restoration, reopening spring 2028. The visitor center is open daily 10 am–6 pm through September 6, then 10 am–5 pm daily September 7–28, and 10 am–5 pm Friday through Monday September 29–October 26. You cannot ride to the top this year. Walk the War of 1812 grounds, then spend the hour you would have spent in line at a cave.
Can I bring my car to Put-in-Bay for the day?
Only on Miller Ferry, and not as a same-day round trip on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays. The vehicle line at Catawba can run two or three hours on a summer Saturday, and island car parking is scarce. Park free at Catawba, walk on, and rent a golf cart at Lime Kiln.
