Lake Erie waterspouts at Cedar Point
If you saw a funnel over the water at Cedar Point this August, that was almost certainly a Lake Erie waterspout. FOX 8 reported one near the peninsula on August 20, 2026. The park usually stays open; boaters should not.
What happened this August and September
On August 20, 2026, FOX 8 viewers sent in photos of a funnel near Cedar Point. Harcher said the timing matched brief rotation over Sandusky Bay, and she called it a likely waterspout. The National Weather Service already had a special marine statement up for showers that could produce wind and waterspouts. The day before, viewers had photographed several more over the lake, including a set off Mentor.
AccuWeather pushed a Cedar Point clip in the same window. Park visitors posted from the parking lot and the beach. The joke in the Cedar Point threads was not the meteorology. It was getting stuck on the ferris wheel with a spout in the background.

NOAA calls the column a whirling mix of air and water mist. FOX 8, citing NWS, puts typical life at 2 to 20 minutes and motion at 10 to 15 knots. A Special Marine Warning for waterspouts often covers a bigger patch of lake than a land tornado warning, because several can fire at once.
Does it ruin a Cedar Point or island day?
For a park ticket, usually no. Rides already stop for lightning and high wind. A distant spout over the lake is in that same weather-hold bucket, not a season-ending event. The beach is the one place to give it room. If a spout comes ashore, NWS issues a tornado warning and you treat it like any other tornado.
For a Put-in-Bay ferry, watch the marine forecast, not Twitter. Miller Ferry and Jet Express cancel for wind, fog, and ice, not for a spout two counties away. If a Special Marine Warning names the island passage, refresh the operator site before you leave the lot.

Are Lake Erie waterspouts dangerous?
On the water, yes. Fair-weather waterspouts are usually small and short-lived, but they can still flip a small boat. The National Weather Service Great Lakes office tells boaters to take them seriously, get to harbor, and never drive closer for a look. If you are on land at Cedar Point, keep your distance and stay off the open beach until it dies.
When do waterspouts form on Lake Erie?
Late summer and early fall, when cooler air slides over still-warm lake water. The NWS looks at water temperature, cold air, moisture, and light winds. They try to flag the threat 12 to 24 hours out in the nearshore marine forecast. FOX 8 notes they often last 2 to 20 minutes and move at 10 to 15 knots.
What should a boater do if a waterspout is on the water?
Move at a right angle to the way it is traveling. Do not run toward it. Listen for a Special Marine Warning on NOAA Weather Radio, and if the spout comes ashore expect a tornado warning. The same rule applies off Put-in-Bay or Kelleys as off Sandusky.
Is a waterspout the same thing as a tornado?
Only some of them. Tornadic waterspouts start as thunderstorm tornadoes and then move over water. Fair-weather waterspouts form on the lake surface and climb toward a cumulus cloud. The fair-weather kind is the one Lake Erie visitors usually film.
