Summer tactics that put fish in the box
Once the schools spread into open water for June through August, the boats putting up fast limits are running a simple program. Pull Bandit crankbaits behind planer boards, roughly 75 to 100 feet back, to cover water and find the depth the fish are holding. When they want a slower presentation, dipsy divers and willow-leaf spoons get down to suspended fish, and switching to a drift with nightcrawler harnesseswhen the trolling bite cools is the classic Western Basin fallback: crews are still coming in with five- and six-person limits inside a few hours. Casting works too, not just trolling, so if the marks are stacked, don't be afraid to stop and pitch to them.
No boat? You are not shut out in summer. Bank anglers pull walleye off the reef-adjacent shorelines and harbor structure after dark and in low light; a couple of hours from shore can still fill a cooler. Start with the public access points below.

Most Western Basin walleye charters run six hours with tackle and bait included. You bring the Ohio fishing license, a cooler and a tip. Here is the math:

Dozens of licensed charter captains sail from Port Clinton, Catawba, Marblehead and Put-in-Bay. Expect 6-hour trips, tackle provided, 4 to 6 anglers typical. July weekends book out months in advance; spring trophy season books out by winter. When you call around, ask a few questions that separate the good boats from the rest: is the rate per person or for the whole boat, and is there a fuel surcharge? Does the captain clean and bag your catch at the dock? How many anglers will be aboard? Are rods, tackle and bait included (they almost always are; the Ohio license is on you)? A captain who answers plainly and talks about recent catches near the reefs is the one to book.
